Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW), a non-profit healthcare service provider, is reporting a significant data breach on 25th January 2024. The attack was claimed by hackers identified as the BlackSuit ransomware gang.

The attack compromised personal and medical information of approximately 533,000 individuals, though it failed to encrypt the targeted devices. This allowed GHC-SCW, with the aid of external cyber incident response professionals, to quickly recover and restore their systems. The investigation by February 9, 2024, confirmed that an attacker had copied data containing protected health information (PHI).

The information stolen includes:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Dates of birth and/or deaths
  • Social security numbers
  • Member numbers
  • Medicare and/or Medicaid numbers

The breach impacted 533,809 individuals. GHC-SCW has initiated sending out data breach notification letters to the affected parties. Affected individuals are advised to closely monitor all communications from healthcare providers for any suspicious activity.
