The Groveport Madison School District in Columbus, Ohio was impacted by a significant security breach this Tuesday, leading to disruptions in internet services and the functionality of specific devices within their facilities. The breach was orchestrated by BlackSuit, a ransomware group, which infiltrated two district servers, impacting Windows devices, file services, and printer/copier systems. The phone systems remained unaffected.
The district has conducted an initial internal review and reported on their website that there has been no compromise of student or staff data due to this breach. Following advice from the Department of Homeland Security's CISA, Groveport Madison Schools has temporarily disabled all internet access as they work on resolving the issue, leading to an internet shutdown in the district on Wednesday.
The district confirmed that schools will remain open. They informed families through an email that phone lines are operational and that attendance records would be managed manually in the interim. Additionally, the district emphasized their commitment to data security, stating that they are taking serious measures to enhance their system's security protocols.
