A hacker known as "HikkI-Chan" has leaked the personal details of over 390 million users, claimed to be of VK, a popular social networking platform in Russia, on the Breach Forums site.

If true, it represents one of the largest privacy breaches in recent history. According to the hacker, the breach is described as a "second-order" breach, meaning that the data was not obtained directly from VK's servers. Instead, it was sourced through a third-party breach that exposed VK's user data. The hacker also clarified that the data was not scraped from VK, and VK's servers were not directly compromised.

The total number of users affected is 390,425,719 with the following exposed data:

  • City
  • Country
  • Full names
  • URL links to user profile images
  • Email addresses (total number unknown)

While the leaked data does not include phone numbers or passwords, the exposed details still pose a significant risk to the privacy of VK users across Russia and Eastern Europe. Cybercriminals can exploit the data to create fake profiles, conduct identity theft, or execute targeted phishing attacks. The inclusion of profile image URLs, which are linked to VK's domain userapi.com, further exacerbates the risk.

This is not the first time VK has experienced a data breach. In June 2016, a hacker sold data from 100 million VK accounts on the dark web. The recent breach represents a continuation of VK's ongoing data security challenges.

VK has not commented on the leak.
