A highly sophisticated hacking group known as ALPHV, also referred to as BlackCat and believed to be associated with Russia, has claimed responsibility for a significant data breach at the largest legal partnership in the country, HWL Ebsworth. According to ALPHV, they have stolen employee and client data totaling 4 terabytes from HWL Ebsworth's servers.

The stolen data includes internal company files, personal employee information such as CVs and IDs, financial reports, accounting and loans data, insurance agreements, client documents including loan data and credit card information, and a comprehensive mapping of the law firm's networks and credentials.

ALPHV provided sample documents on their victim website post, revealing notable clients of HWL Ebsworth over the past five years. HWL Ebsworth is working with third-party experts and the Australian Cyber Security Centre to investigate the breach and ensure the security of their systems.

The law firm has not yet confirmed the credibility of ALPHV's claims or the extent of the potential data impact. Despite the ongoing investigations, HWL Ebsworth assures that their operations are unaffected, and they remain committed to providing exceptional service to their clients.

On 8 June, the AlphV ransomware gang, also known as Blackcat, said it released 1.45 of the four terabytes of data it allegedly stole from the HWL Ebsworth in early May this year.
