Hilb Group has issued an alert to over 81,000 individuals that intruders may have compromised their work email system, potentially accessing sensitive personal data.

The irregularities were initially noticed on January 10, which led to an investigation with a third-party cybersecurity firm. It was found that the breach occurred between December 1, 2022, and January 12, 2023.

A lengthy review of the email accounts concluded on July 28, aimed at identifying the nature and ownership of the compromised information. Subsequently, it took additional months to pinpoint the individuals affected. On October 9, Hilb began notifying the 81,539 potentially affected parties, proposing free credit monitoring and identity protection services as recompense.

The information at risk includes:

  • full names
  • account numbers with security codes,
  • passwords,
  • PINs,
  • Social Security numbers.

The financial services company, which provides insurance and advisory services across multiple US states, hasn't provided other details on the breach's scope or the method of data access.
