he Hong Kong Programming Society has come under scrutiny after a cyberattack and data breach exposed sensitive personal information of its members, which is now being sold on the dark web.
In response to the breach, the society issued a statement on Saturday, outlining the steps being taken to mitigate the impact, including shutting down servers, identifying and patching the security flaw and halting the submission of contact information by members
The stolen data includes:
- Names
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Occupations
- Account passwords
Hackers are reportedly selling this information in exchange for Bitcoin. The number of affected individuals is not clear.
The society has expressed regret over the incident and apologized to all stakeholders, promising to take steps to prevent such occurrences in the future. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data stated that it has not yet received a data breach notice from the society but plans to reach out to gather more information on the incident.
