The Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, a secondary school, reported a potential data breach that may have compromised the personal information of over 1,000 individuals, including graduates, students, parents, teachers, staff, and tenants. The breach was discovered on May 13th 2024 when the school's information technology staff noticed issues with the printer, leading to the discovery that the computer server had been hacked.
To mitigate the breach, the school shut down its campus intranet and it will remain offline until the cybersecurity risk is fully eliminated. The school has started a scanning and re-installation of the server and all computers, a process expected to take at least a week. Temporary internet access plans will be implemented for educational purposes during this period.
The school has notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, the Police and the Education Bureau.
The potentially exposed data includes:
- Telephone numbers
- Residential addresses
- Details of organizations renting the school's facilities for events
The school has advised those potentially affected to be vigilant for any suspicious communication attempts. They have also notified parents and students about the incident and apologized.
