Irish taxi software company iCabbi has exposed the personal information of approximately 287,000 taxi passengers in Ireland and the UK. iCabbi, which was founded in Howth and later acquired a majority stake by Renault in 2018, is recognized as a leading dispatch technology provider worldwide, serving around 100,000 taxis daily across various countries.
The breach was discovered by security researcher Jeremiah Fowler from VPNMentor, who found an unprotected database containing almost 23,000 records and documents with personal information. iCabbi acknowledged the issue, attributing it to an oversight during a database migration process.
The breach, described by the company as a result of "human error," involved the exposure of customer data:
- passenger names,
- emails,
- phone numbers,
The breach is exposing a wide range of individuals including senior BBC directors, journalists, executives, British government officials, and an EU country ambassador.
The company has informed the affected taxi companies to inform them of the incident.
