Kansas City traffic management system down after cyberattack

The traffic management system in Kansas City, Missouri, known as Scout, remains offline following a cyberattack that occurred last Thursday, 25th of April 2024.

The Missouri Department of Transportation announced the system's downtime on social media, stating that the KC website and services would be unavailable until further notice. As a precaution, all real-time cameras and information boards were immediately shut down.

Missouri Department of Transportation assured that traffic monitoring continues, and drivers are advised to check the Missouri or Kansas transportation websites for current traffic information.

Efforts are underway to restore the services, though there is currently no specified timeline for when the systems will be fully operational again.

The exact nature of the cyberattack and the identity of the attackers have not been disclosed.

Update - As of 6th of May 2024 Play ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Kansas City Scout System, however, it's unclear whether they actually conducted the attack or are merely claiming responsibility to attract attention. There is no confirmation of these claims by Kansas City officials.
