The Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) is investigating a claimed data breach involving its vehicle registration system. Reports circulated on social media that the BRA's system had been hacked, leading to the exposure of personal information.

BRA has taken its vehicle registration portal offline and is collaborating with law enforcement and partners to assess the extent of the breach.

In a statement, the BRA confirmed it is "actively investigating" the incident and is working closely with law enforcement and partners to determine the nature and scope of the breach. The Data Commissioner has been informed and will be kept updated throughout the investigation. Due to the ongoing investigation, the BRA has refrained from providing specific details about the breach or the security measures in place.

The BRA has advised the public to monitor their personal accounts for any unusual or suspicious activity and report any suspicious activity or communications appearing to come from the BRA to the Data Privacy Officer at privacy@bra.gov.bb.

The nature of the attack and the number of affected individuals by the breach is not disclosed.

The BRA acknowledged the inconvenience caused by taking the vehicle registration system offline but stressed that the precaution was necessary to protect personal data and aid the investigation.
