Kwik Trip, a prominent US chain of over 800 convenience stores and gas stations, has issued another statement regarding an ongoing IT outage.
The statement is strongly implying that it has been the victim of a cyberattack resulting in disruptions to its IT systems. The outage, which has affected the Kwik Rewards program, support systems, phones, and email, began on October 8th.
In a previous statement, Kwik Trip referred to the disruption as a "network incident," but did not directly confirm it as a cyberattack.
In their latest statement, Kwik Trip did not explicitly use the term "cyberattack," but indicated that they had enlisted the services of security experts and emphasized that there is no evidence of data theft, characterizing it as a cybersecurity incident.
Update - On Thursday, 19th October 2023, the company confirmed it was a “cyber-security” incident, saying that after a thorough investigation, there is “no indication that the guests’ payment card information was involved.”
They stated that customer-facing systems remain unaffected, and they are conducting a thorough investigation with third-party information security experts.
Despite their assurance that no personal or confidential information has been acquired by unauthorized parties, concerns among customers and employees persist regarding data security, prompting recommendations for monitoring credit history and transactions and exercising caution with suspicious emails purportedly from Kwik Trip.
