Leduc County, a municipal government in Alberta, Canada, reports a ransomware attack detected on December 25, 2025. Hackers broke into several IT systems, forcing the administration to shut down networks to stop the malware from spreading, causing many municipal services offline while experts checked the damage.
Mayor Tanni Doblanko confirmed the breach on January 4, 2026. She stated that the county's team spotted the intrusion early and worked with outside security firms to isolate the affected systems.
Preliminary findings suggest that the attackers only accessed a small amount of data, but the exposed data and number of affected individuals are not disclosed.
The county notified the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, insurance providers, and banks about the incident. Forensic investigators are currently looking into how the attackers got in and what they accessed. While the investigation continues, many IT systems remain offline.
