The LockBit ransomware group has claimed responsibility for breaching the systems of the Federal Reserve of the United States.

The Federal Reserve operates twelve banking districts across the United States, overseeing money distribution within their respective districts. The cities home to these Reserve Banks include Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlanta, Dallas, Saint Louis, Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and San Francisco.

Per the statements of LockBit on their dark web site, they have stolen 33 terabytes of sensitive data, which they describe as containing "Americans’ banking secrets." They threaten to leak the stolen data on June 25, 2024, at 20:27:10 UTC. The group’s announcement criticized the Federal Reserve's negotiator and demanded a better offer than $50,000 for the stolen data.

No samples of the stolen data have been published as of yet and the Federal Reserve has not commented.

In early June 2024, the FBI announced it had obtained over 7,000 LockBit decryption keys that could aid victims in recovering their encrypted data. The FBI is encouraging all potential victims of LockBit ransomware to come forward to possibly reclaim their data
