Taipei's Mackay Memorial Hospital reports ransomware attack. Hackers allegedly stole 16.6 million patient records in what appears to be one of the largest healthcare data breaches in the country's history.

The breach occurred in early February 2025 when the hospital was targeted by the "Crazy Hunter" ransomware group. The attackers both encrypted and exfiltrated data simultaneously. Apparently, the attack did not disrupt the hospital's ability to provide patient care.

While the total number of affected records is reported as 16.6 million documents, details about the types of exposed data have not been disclosed. The leaked information appears to include medical records, though authorities have yet to confirm if all the data originated from Mackay Memorial Hospital.

The same ransomware group targeted Changhua Christian Hospital, indicating a coordinated campaign against Taiwanese healthcare institutions. In response to these attacks, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has developed Taiwan's first "Hospital Ransomware Response Guidelines," which outline standard operating procedures for hospitals to follow when facing ransomware threats.

Mackay Memorial Hospital have alerted relevant authorities, including the health ministry and the Investigation Bureau. The hospital is cooperating with cybersecurity experts but has limited its public comments due to the ongoing investigation.

The hospital has established a dedicated cybersecurity hotline at (02) 2543-3535 extension 3564 for concerned individuals and has warned the public to be vigilant about potential scams that may emerge from this data breach.
