MathWorks, the Massachusetts-based developer of the popular MATLAB computing platform and Simulink simulation software, confirmed it was hit by a ransomware attack that severely disrupted its online services and internal systems.
The attack began on Sunday, May 18, 2025, and caused widespread outages across multiple applications.
The company stated in an official incident report that "MathWorks experienced a ransomware attack" and that "the attack affected our IT systems." Affected systems included:
- MATLAB Online,
- MATLAB Mobile,

Some students reported being forced to resort to pirated versions of the software to complete their academic work, while others faced potential deadline extensions due to the outage.
The company has not disclosed whether any customer or internal data was stolen during the attack, or the number of affected individuals. The platform is serving over 5 million users worldwide,
MathWorks reported that it "notified federal law enforcement of this matter" and has been working with cybersecurity experts to restore systems.
Update - as of 28th of August 2025, MathWorks, reports that the attack exposed the data of over 10,000 people.
