Mondelez International, the maker of Oreo cookies and Ritz crackers, has issued a warning to over 51,000 current and former employees about a security breach that occurred at a law firm hired by the company.
The breach involves unauthorized access to the network of Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, a legal services provider for Mondelez. The compromised personal information has the following data points
- social security numbers,
- names,
- addresses,
- dates of birth,
- marital status,
- gender,
- employee identification numbers,
- retirement plan details
Although Mondelez is not aware of any misuse of the stolen information, they have taken the precautionary measure of offering affected employees free credit monitoring services for a period of 24 months.
Bryan Cave detected unauthorized access to their systems on February 27. The intrusion had commenced on February 23 and persisted until March 1. The law firm reported the breach to Mondelez on March 24, after determining that employee information had been compromised. Finally, on May 22, Mondelez concluded their review of the affected information, identified all impacted current and former employees, and initiated the notification process.
The company did not disclose specific details about how the criminals breached Bryan Cave's network, the extent of the data stolen, or whether a ransom was demanded to delete the stolen information.
