The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, a pro bono law firm in California, is reporting a ransomware attack that resulted in the exposure of personal information for more than 42,000 individuals. The law firm, which has been serving the community for nearly 50 years, provides free legal services to those in need.

The affected individuals include both clients and staff members of the law firm, which comprises approximately 90 attorneys, social workers, staff, and volunteers, serving around 10,000 people annually.

The breach, which occurred in February, led to the leak of sensitive data, including Social Security numbers and other personal information. Although operations resumed after the Presidents Day holiday weekend, an investigation later revealed that one server had been compromised, prompting the law firm to engage cybersecurity specialists to conduct an extensive forensic investigation.

The breached information includes:

  • Social Security numbers,
  • medical records,
  • immigration numbers,
  • financial data,
  • driver's license numbers,
  • financial account/payment card information,
  • passport/government identification,
  • taxpayer-identification numbers,
  • dates of birth,
  • digital signatures.

Following the attack, the Law Foundation posted a message on its website acknowledging that they had fallen victim to a sophisticated ransomware attack and reported it to the authorities.

The law firm is now offering 12 months of identity protection services and identity theft insurance to the victims, which include both adults and minors.
