Over 45,000 customers of the Metropolitan Opera (Met Opera) have been affected by a data breach, exposing their personal information. The breach compromised sensitive details, including social security numbers, credit card information, driver's license numbers, and financial account data.
The incident occurred in December 2022 when the renowned New York opera house experienced a cybersecurity attack that disrupted its website, ticketing systems, and payroll systems. Recent reports indicate that approximately 45,094 individuals may have had their personal information compromised during the cyber attack, including credit card details, social security numbers, card payment information (including PINs), and more.
The attack resulted in the Met Opera's website being inaccessible for a continuous period of thirty hours in December. However, it is possible that the hackers had access to the system for an extended duration, as system breaches were detected between September 30 and December 6, 2022.
The Met Opera stated that they were unable to determine the source of the attacks. As a remedial measure, the opera house will provide impacted customers with two years of free identity monitoring services.
