Learn More
New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) has been hit by a ransomware attack detected early on April 3rd and causing a suspension of most campus operations and class cancellations for over 11 days. The ransomware disrupted NMHU's ability to authenticate access to its intranet portal used by students, faculty, and staff to access online classes, materials, and other essential platforms and software necessary for coursework.
The university shut down its Wi-Fi network and portal access as a precaution and is making alternate arrangements to ensure the timely distribution of paychecks, establishing a backup computer center and dedicated phone lines to assist employees and supervisors with timesheet submissions, typically managed through the portal.
No details are disclosed about any data compromised or number of affected individuals.
The university is currently working to restore services, with support from state officials and vendors. There's no specific timeline for when the system will be fully operational again.
