Nidec Corporation has reported that its subsidiary, Nidec Instruments Corporation was hit by a ransomware attack on May 26, 2024. Nidec Instruments Corporation, part of the Nidec Group, is a japanese company involved in the research, development, manufacturing, and sales of a wide range of products, including motors, motor drive units, card readers, industrial robots, and music boxes

This incident resulted in multiple files on the company's server being encrypted.  The company has established a company-wide task force and is in consultation with external cybersecurity experts anb authorities. Internal business operations have been significantly impaired.

The specific extent of the data breach is still under investigation.

Nidec Instruments has expressed an apology to its business partners and related parties for the substantial concerns and inconveniences caused by this incident.

Update - as of 18th of October 2024, Nidec Corporation confirmed a data breach following a the ransomware attack that occurred on 26th of May 2024. The breach was attributed to the 8BASE ransomware group and later claimed by the Everest ransomware group. It resulted in data being leaked on the dark web after Nidec did not comply with the attackers’ demands. The incident primarily affected Nidec Precision, a division based in Vietnam that produces optical, electronic, and mechanical equipment.

The attack did not involve file encryption but instead focused on stealing data from Nidec's servers. A total of 50,694 files were stolen, including:

  • Internal documents
  • Letters from business partners
  • Green procurement documents
  • Labor safety and health policies (business and supply chain)
  • Business documents (purchase orders, invoices, receipts)
  • Contracts

Nidec claims that no financial or personal information misuse has been observed so far, but Nidec employees, contractors, and associates are advised to be cautious of potential targeted phishing attempts.
