NIH Federal Credit Union reports Data Breach to 14706 Members

The National Institutes of Health Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU) reported a data breach incident. The breach was discovered when it was found that an unauthorized party had gained access to an employee's email account.

In response, NIHFCU promptly secured the compromised email account and initiated an internal investigation with the assistance of external cybersecurity experts.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the unauthorized party had accessed the employee's email account for a period of several hours on April 11, 2023. It was discovered that some of the emails and attachments within the compromised account contained confidential consumer information. NIH Federal Credit Union reviewed the compromised files. The specific data breached may vary depending on the individual, but the exposed data of 14,706 individuals could potentially include personal information such as names and Social Security numbers.

To ensure that those affected by the recent data security incident were promptly informed, NIH Federal Credit Union initiated the process of sending out data breach notification letters on July 5, 2023.
