The Charles George VA Medical Center, in Asheville, North Carolina, has reported a data breach affecting the personal information of over 1,541 veterans.

The breach occurred via an email correspondence on May 12, which exposed the personal information. The email contained an attachment that was sent securely to three veterans.

Two of the recipients acknowledged receiving the email, and the medical center recalled the emails using a secure messaging system. The medical center acted promptly by deleting the information from recipients who had not yet accessed the email.

To ensure the safety of the affected veterans, the Medical Center is notifying them about the potential risk to their personal information. As a precautionary measure, the department is offering free credit monitoring services to those individuals whose social security numbers may have been compromised.

Veterans who have been informed of their involvement in the incident are advised to follow the instructions provided in the notification letter to safeguard their data. Veterans who did not receive a mail alert do not need to take any action, as their personal information was not affected.
