Learn More

The Northern Ireland Department of Education has reported a data leak exposing the personal details of over 400 individuals who had offered to contribute to a review of special education needs.

The leak occurred when the department mistakenly sent an email containing a spreadsheet of 407 individuals to 174 recipients. The exposed data includes:

  • Names
  • Email addresses
  • Titles
  • Comments made by individuals

The 174 recipients were asked to delete the email and confirm its deletion. Affected individuals have been contacted by the department to inform them of the breach. The Northern Ireland education minister, Paul Givan, issued an unreserved apology and emphasized the department's commitment to data protection. A full investigation, led by Internal Audit, has been initiated by the permanent secretary.
