Omni Hotels hit by major IT outage, reminiscent of the MGM ransomware attack
Learn More
The luxury hotel chain Omni Hotels & Resorts experienced significant IT system outages starting from Friday, affecting over 50 properties across the US and Canada.
The disruption, reminiscent of the MGM Resorts ransomware infection previously, halted reservations, compromised hotel room door lock systems, and disrupted point-of-sale (POS) systems.
Omni Hotels acknowledged the situation via social media, appealing for patience and understanding from their guests while their technology teams worked to restore the downed systems.
The specific cause of the outage, whether related to a ransomware attack similar to MGM Resorts' experience, was not initially disclosed. Omni Hotels ultimately confirmed the disruption was the result of a cyberattack, prompting an immediate shutdown of systems to protect and contain data.
No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack, but it's quite possible that it's ransomware.
Update - DAIXIN Team ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Omni Hotels & Resorts. The ransomware gang glaims that they have stolen sensitive data, including records of all visitors dating back to 2017.
On 14th of April 2024 Omni Hotels & Resorts confirmed that customer data was compromised in the cyberattack. The impacted data may include:
- names,
- mailing addresses,
- guest loyalty program information.
While many systems have been restored, the hotel continues to work on regaining full functionality and has apologized for the inconvenience caused by the attack. A security firm has been engaged to investigate the breach, including potential data losses and how the attackers gained access.
