Origin Energy, one of Australia's largest energy retailers, is reporting the theft of customer credit and debit card information by a malicious employee.
The incident affected more than 700 customers and was discovered on July 30, 2025, when the employee attempted to email an encrypted file containing sensitive customer payment details to their private email.
The stolen file contained customers' credit and debit card numbers that had been used to pay their energy bills. Origin Energy managed to intervene before the data could be transmitted outside the organization. Exposed data includes:
- Credit card numbers
- Debit card numbers
- Payment information used for energy bill payments
Origin Energy has not disclosed additional details about the employee's identity, their role within the organization or what disciplinary or legal actions have been taken against them.
Origin Energy took notified the affected customers and warned them that their payment card details may have been compromised. The company has advised customers to monitor their bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized or suspicious transactions and to contact their financial institutions if they identify any fraudulent activity. Customers have been encouraged to consider requesting replacement cards from their banks as a precautionary measure to prevent potential misuse of the compromised card numbers.
