The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has confirmed a data breach that exposed corporate contact information of 3,997 employees and affiliates.

The data was stolen from MyPBS.org, PBS's internal service platform used by public television employees. The stolen data was discovered circulating on Discord servers, within "PBS Kids" fan communities where young adults, teenagers, and children discuss their favorite shows.

According to reports, the sharing appears to stem from a "cool factor" of possessing the data rather than exploitation for monetary gain. The compromised data includes:

  • Employee names
  • Corporate email addresses
  • Job titles
  • Timezones
  • Department information
  • Office locations
  • Job functions
  • Personal hobbies
  • Supervisors' names

The nature of the attack is not disclosed.

PBS confirmed the breach after being notified that the file was posted online and launched an investigation of the incident. The company has reached out to affected users to inform them of the incident. PBS claims that no other internal system is affected.
