Pennsylvania Water Utility control systems hijacked by hackers

The Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa in Pennsylvania has reported that hackers gained control over a system linked to one of their booster stations. They assured that the water supply remained safe. The utility, which serves over 6,600 customers in Aliquippa and parts of neighboring townships, was alerted to the breach by an alarm and responded by shutting down the affected system.
he attack was claimed by a group identified as Cyber Av3ngers, which is believed to have connections to Iran and has shown anti-Israel sentiments. The group has made claims of compromising multiple water treatment systems in Israel, but their assertions are often considered to be overstated, and on occasion, they have been caught fabricating data.
The group targeted an industrial control system produced by the Israeli firm Unitronics, known for its Vision system—a combination of a programmable logic controller and an integrated interface, which had previously been flagged for security weaknesses.
Industrial Control Interfaces also known as Human-Machine interfaces can be vulnerable to attacks due to insufficient security measures and difficulty and reluctance in patching them. This makes such systems susceptible even to simple cyber threats.
