Pharmaceutical research firm Inotiv hit by ransomware attack, drug development data compromised

American pharmaceutical company Inotiv reports a ransomware attack that encrypted its systems and disrupted business operations on August 8, 2025. 

The attack was claimed by the Qilin ransomware gang. According to the threat actors, they stole sensitive research data during and have published data samples on their dark web leak site to prove their claims. The ransomware gang claims to have stolen approximately 162,000 files totaling 176GB of data.

Inotiv started an investigation, engaged external cybersecurity specialists, notified authorities and restricted access to certain systems. The incident has caused and is expected to continue to cause disruptions to business operations.

Based on Qilin's claims and document samples posted on their leak portal, the compromised data appears to include:

  • Detailed clinical reports
  • Internal communications
  • Analytical data
  • Research data spanning the last 10 years
  • Confidential research materials
  • Drug development and testing reports

The number of affected individuals has not been disclosed by Inotiv. 

Update - as of 7th of December 2025, Inotiv confirmed that the attackers stole an unspecified amount of company data. The company has completed forensic investigation and is issuing legally required notifications. No details are disclosed about any exposed individuals or types of stolen data.
