Pioneer Valley Ophthalmic Consultants, PC (PVOC), a medical practice specializing in optometry and ophthalmology from Holyoke, Massachusetts, reported a data breach incidenl.
PVOC discovered that a third-party vendor, Alta Medical Management, had experienced a security breach, leading to unauthorized access to confidential information belonging to PVOC patients.
PVOC became aware of two separate data security incidents involving Alta Medical Management, PVOC's vendor. The first incident occurred between November 13, 2021, and November 15, 2021, when a ransomware attack granted unauthorized access to Alta Medical Management's billing servers. The second incident involved the potential for unauthorized access to Alta Medical Management's online patient portal, which lasted until October 26, 2021.
Alta Medical Management launched an investigation to ascertain the extent of the information compromised during these incidents. The investigation identified the files that hackers may have accessed and PVOC conducted a comprehensive review to determine the specific information that could have been available to the unauthorized parties.
The breached information may vary for each individual affected but could include personal details such as:
- name,
- address,
- email address,
- Social Security number,
- payment card information,
- medical records.
The number of affected individuals is not shared by PVOC.
On May 22, 2023, Pioneer Valley Ophthalmic Consultants initiated the distribution of data breach notification letters to inform all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent security incident.
