Ransomware attack on Mower County exposes data of over 27,000 Minnesota residents

Mower County in Minnesota is reporting a ransomware attack that compromised the personal information of 27,064 residents. 

The attack was detected on June 18, 2025. The investigation confirmed that breached the county's computer systems between June 11 and June 18, and personal data collected by the county was stolen. Federal law enforcement was notified and the county took most of its systems offline as a precautionary measure while working to restore services safely.

The exposed data include:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Names
  • Dates of birth
  • Identification card numbers
  • Fingerprints
  • Financial account information
  • Medical and health insurance information
  • Payment card information

As of December 3, 2024, county officials цлаим there are no indications that the compromised personal information has been released or offered for sale on criminal marketplaces. 

Mower County began mailing notification letters to affected residents on December 3, 2024. County officials are offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to affected individuals. Residents are being urged to actively monitor their account statements and explanation of benefits statements, review their free credit reports for suspicious activity, and report any suspected incidents of identity theft to local law enforcement.
