Robeson Health Care Corporation announced on November 27th that they discovered malware in their computer systems in February. Following an investigation that concluded around October 9th, the company believes over 60,000 individuals might be impacted.

The North Carolina-based healthcare company's communication regarding the breach's severity was somewhat inconsistent. In a notification to U.S. citizens impacted by the breach, Robeson initially stated there was no evidence of unauthorized access to their electronic medical records databases.

The company later acknowledged that a review of former patient data revealed that sensitive personal information might have been exposed during the unauthorized access period, including:

  • names,
  • Social Security Numbers,
  • medical information,
  • dates of birth,
  • health insurance information.

The nature of the attack is not disclosed.

It remains unclear whether the breach affected only patients or extended to employees and third-party contractors as well. Robeson has provided a year of free identity theft protection services to those affected.
