Rockford Public Schools in Michigan has been hit by a ransomware attack, prompting them to shut down its computer network and phone systems to prevent further spread. FBI was also notified and a private technology security firm is engaged to assess the impact.
The incident was discovered on Wednesday 15th of May 2024 when attackers remotely printed out a ransom note on a school printer. Emergency phones are being set up at all school buildings to ensure parents can still contact the schools.
The school superintendent emphasized that the attack, while disrupting technology, has not significantly impacted the school day. He assured that students are safe and classes continue using traditional methods such as books and pencils, with no current plans for cancellations.
The extent of the data breach is currently unknown, though initial indications suggest it may be limited due to only a few printers receiving the ransom note. The timeline for restoring the network and phone systems is still pending.
