The official website of the Sabah government in East Malaysia, sabah.gov.my, experienced a security breach. Sabah is one of the two Malaysian states located on the island of Borneo, the other being Sarawak.
This incident was announced in a Telegram group, where the hackers claimed they had accessed and extracted 109 files from the site, including classified documents and Excel tables containing internal information. The hackers substantiated their claim by posting excerpts from three government documents: an internal memo from the Sabah State Library, a letter from the Sabah Finance Ministry to the Semporna district engineer, and a letter from the Kota Belud district officer to another state agency.
The head of cybersecurity at the Sabah Computer Services Department confirmed the breach but reported no ransom demands. His department is conducting a thorough forensic analysis to pinpoint the involved devices and users. Per the Sabah government claims, while most of the leaked documents were public and shared externally, some were confidential.
Apparently the experts have identified and isolated the primary source of the leak. Human error was the root cause of the incident. The department is now implementing remedial and corrective measures. Further details have not been provided as the case is still under active investigation.
