The San Joaquin County Superior Court in California is grappling with a severe technology outage following a cyberattack that has disrupted nearly all of its digital services.

The court serves nearly 800,000 residents and initially reported technical issues on Wednesday 30th of October but confirmed on Thursday 31st of October that these disruptions were due to a cybersecurity incident.

The attack has rendered several essential services inoperable, affecting court operations and impacting residents in significant ways. The cyberattack has led to the following outages:

  • Phone and Fax Services: All phone and fax communications are currently offline.
  • Juror Reporting Systems: Online platforms providing instructions for jurors are unavailable.
  • E-Filing and Payment Systems: The e-filing platform and credit card payment processing services have been knocked out.
  • General Court Websites: Access to the court’s main website, essential for various public and legal resources, is disabled.

As a result of these disruptions, some jurors scheduled to appear this week were excused from duty. Additionally, the court took “proactive steps” to isolate its network from the internet to contain the attack, which has delayed the restoration of services.

The court has hired cybersecurity experts to assist in the investigation and remediation efforts.

There is no timeline for when full functionality will be restored, and no hacking group or ransomware operation has claimed responsibility for the incident. Given the nature of the attack, it is unclear if any data was compromised, as the court has not disclosed this information.

Update - As of 7th of November 2025, the court confirmed that the attack exposed sensitive information including Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and credit card numbers. The court has not disclosed the number of affected individuals but is offering one year of identity protection and credit monitoring services to impacted persons.
