Spartanburg County hit by cyber attack, personal data compromised

Spartanburg County in South Carolina is reporting a cybersecurity incident discovered in early August 2025 that resulted in unauthorized access to employee personal information.
The State Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the incident, and the county worked to contain the attack and restore affected systems. The county disabled certain connections and electronic services as a precautionary measure. All essential services including 911 operations and emergency communications continued to operate normally.
The county reports that "a limited number" of personnel onboarding files containing employee information were accessed during the breach. The county noted that most of the accessed personnel files are part of the public record. Exposed data includes:
- Personally identifiable information from personnel onboarding files
- Employee information contained in hiring documentation
- Data from personnel records spanning multiple years of employment
The nature of the attack and the number of affected individuals are not disclosed.
In April 2023, the county suffered a ransomware attack that disrupted computer networks and required coordination with state and federal law enforcement, including the FBI.
Spartanburg County is offering complimentary credit monitoring services to all county employees, regardless of whether their information was affected.
Update - as of 23 of December, Spartanburg County reports that 9,756 residents were affected by the incident.
