Suspected breach of unclassfied U.S. House Committee email systems

Salt Typhoon hackers are suspected of breaking into email systems used by staff at the U.S. House of Representatives. The suspected breach hit committees that oversee China policy, foreign affairs, intelligence, and the military.
Investigators detected suspicious activity in December 2025.
The attackers targeted unclassified networks instead of hardened classified systems. These networks are often easier to hit but still hold sensitive policy drafts and briefing notes which gives foreign agents a clearer view of future U.S. moves regarding China and national defense without the need to breach more secure environments.
The allegedly compromised data includes:
- Internal policy discussion drafts
- Briefing materials for House committees
- Staff email communications
- Strategic oversight documents
The nature of the attack is not clear but it's suspected that the hackers used edge device vulnerabilities to gain entry. The number of affected individuals is not disclosed.
CISA and the FBI are now investigating the extent of the breach. The Chinese embassy denied the claims and called them "unfounded speculation."
