The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District in British Columbia discovered a security breach involving the email account of SLRD Director Tony Rainbow. An unauthorized email was distributed to over 400 recipients from the compromised account. The suspicious message contained a link and made references to a purchase order and invoice, raising security concerns.

After detecting the incident, the SLRD secured the compromised email account and put measures in place to prevent further unauthorized emails from being sent. They notified all recipients about the potential threat, specifically warning them not to engage with any links or attachments contained in the message due to possible harmful content.

The SLRD has stated that there is no indication of an information breach beyond the email account compromise. The attack vector or method used to compromise the account has not been disclosed, though the incident bears characteristics of a potential phishing or password breach.

For those who may have already interacted with the email, the SLRD recommended contacting their organization's IT support team and directed them to cybersecurity resources available through the Government of Canada.
