Another data breach may have affected the Tasmanian Government, as the Australian Government launches an investigation into a breach targeting HWL Ebsworth, a prominent commercial law firm in the country.

The purpose of the investigation is to determine whether any Tasmanian information has been compromised in this incident. Federal authorities had informed the Tasmanian Government about the attack, which potentially includes state information.

Although the process may be time-consuming due to the large volume of data involved, the Tasmanian government is taking immediate action and pledges to keep the local community updated as the situation progresses.

The breach was initially disclosed to the state government on May 2, with reports indicating that hackers had claimed to possess employee IDs, financial data, accounting data, and client documents.

This investigation follows a previous data breach involving the Tasmanian government, which occurred a few months ago and was linked to the hacking of a third-party file transfer service.

On 8 June, the AlphV ransomware gang, also known as Blackcat, said it released 1.45 of the four terabytes of data it allegedly stole from the HWL Ebsworth in early May this year.
