The Town of Cornelius, North Carolina, detected and contained a cyberattack aimed at deploying ransomware, which could have locked the town's system and demanded a ransom for its release.
The attack was discovered by Cornelius staff on Tuesday and preemtively shut down some of the town services. They made the event public on Wednesday.
The town's IT department is currently collaborating with state and county officials to scan and clean the computer system, with some town services potentially being temporarily unavailable during the restoration process.
