IdeaLab, a California-based technology startup incubator and venture capital firm, has confirmed it was hit by a ransomware attack that compromised personal information belonging to current and former employees, support service contractors, and their dependents.
The company reports the breach in July 2025, nearly a year after the initial attack on October 4, 2024. IdeaLab detected suspicious activity on its network on October 7, 2024. The company engaged third-party cybersecurity services to assist with the investigation and response efforts.
The investigation confirmed that attackers had successfully stolen data from the company's systems during the breach window.
The Hunters International ransomware group claimed responsibility for the incident and leaked the stolen data on the dark web after what appears to have been a failed extortion attempt. Hunters International announced in July 2025 that it was disbanding operations and released free decryption keys for all of its victims, including IdeaLab.
IdeaLab has not disclosed the nature of the exposed data and the number of affected individuals. According to threat intelligence reports, the leaked data archive was substantial, totaling 262.8 GB in size and containing approximately 137,000 files.
The is sending notification letters to the affected individuals and is offering affected individuals complimentary identity theft protection services for a 24-month period.
