Approximately 3,000 Telstra customers on the Opticomm network had their personal information leaked on a hacking forum. Opticomm, a fixed-line internet wholesaler, acknowledged that some information related to services it supplies was published online. However, the company clarified that its operating and business systems were not compromised and that the published information pertains only to customers from a specific internet provider, which is Telstra.
Despite the hacker claiming the dataset included over 47,000 Opticomm customers, investigations by WhistleOut suggest that the vast majority of these records are dummy data. A Telstra spokesperson has confirmed the breach, noting that they are aware of the data file released and it contains personal information of about 3,000 Telstra customers.
The data breach, allegedly contains personal details such as:
- names,
- email addresses,
- phone numbers.
No details are disclosed about the nature of the attack.
Telstra is actively contacting all affected customers and offering support through IDCare, Australia’s national identity and cybersecurity community support service. They is also working closely with Opticomm to understand how the data was accessed.
