The Town of Summerville in South Carolina has confirmed a ransomware attack claimed by Embargo ransomware group, suspected to be the successor of the dismantled ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware gang.

The Embargo group claims to have stolen 1.71 TB of data from the Summerville Police Department and has set a ransom deadline for July 30. The group has alleged that the stolen data pertains to racially charged shootings by the police department.

The City claims that operations of Summerville’s municipal departments remain unaffected. The attack was contained, and an investigation is currently underway. The South Carolina Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity Task Force, including SLED Computer Crimes, FBI, and the South Carolina National Guard, is assisting with the investigation.

Officials have yet to determine the specific data accessed by the hackers but are promise to keep the community informed.

Christopher Makowski, Summerville’s public information officer, emphasized in a statement to StateScoop that there is no current evidence suggesting any data or sensitive documents were compromised.
