The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) reported a major ransomware attack on February 19, 2026, which forced the closure of all 35 clinic locations across the state.
UMMC had to shut down its entire IT network to stop the attack and blocked access to the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) platform. The medical center's phone systems also failed, preventing many departments from taking calls. Vice Chancellor LouAnn Woodward confirmed the medical center is in contact with the attackers.
The medical center has not yet confirmed if any data was stolen or if individuals were exposed.
UMMC moved to manual downtime procedures, using pen and paper for patient care. The incident caused the cancellation of all elective surgeries, imaging appointments, and outpatient procedures. Emergency services and in-person classes continue.
The organization is working with federal authorities to assess the breach. Official updates are expected on the UMMC website as the investigation continues.
