The LockBit ransomware group has attacked the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec and has begun releasing what apperas to be stolen data from the university.
The Université de Sherbrooke, known in French as UdeS, is a prominent public research university located in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, with an additional campus in Longueuil, a suburb near Montreal. It is recognized as the only French-language university in the Estrie region of Quebec. As of 2022, the university is home to 31,000 students and 3,000 older learners in its "University of the Third Age" program, employing about 4,000 teaching staff among its 7,400 employees.
The university acknowledged a data breach in one of its research labs on December 7 but did not confirm a ransomware attack or disclose if personal or intellectual property data was compromised.
Educational institutions are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals due to perceived vulnerabilities and the potential for pressured ransom payments.
