Uttarakhand State Data Center hit by ransomware, disrupts govt ervices

Learn More

A ransomware attack on the Uttarakhand State Data Center caused significant disruption to several government websites and critical services, including police case filings and treasury operations.

Uttarakhand is a state located in northern India. It was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in the year 2000 and renamed from Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand in 2007.

The attack left a ransom note on the state's IT servers. Authorities chose not to pay the ransom and instead launched an investigation, involving agencies like the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and CERT-In.

Initial findings suggest that the malware might have infiltrated the system through an unauthorized app, but investigators are still determining whether this was a targeted attack. Teams have been working to restore affected services, with some, such as e-filing, now back online. However, around 20 websites remain offline due to outdated software. In response, IT officials are planning to rebuild these sites with enhanced security measures.

No details are disclosed about any data breached or impacted individuals. The state reports tha the investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as the situation develops.
