Venice Film Festival confirms data breach affecting accredited participants

The Venice International Film Festival has confirmed a cyberattack that compromised the personal data of accredited participants for the 2025 event, including journalists and industry members. 

The attack took place on July 7, 2025. Unknown attackers gained access to festival servers and copied stored documents containing sensitive information about individuals registered for the 82nd edition of the festival.

The exposed data includes:

  • Names of accredited festival participants
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Mailing addresses
  • Tax codes (for attendees eligible to claim VAT refunds on accreditation fees)

The nature of the attack, and the number of affected individuals have not been disclosed.

The organization's IT team "intervened promptly, isolating the affected systems and securing them. The competent authorities were immediately informed, and restoration operations were initiated.

Festival organizers have notified all affected individuals through formal breach notifications sent via email and other communication channels. Those concerned about the security of their data or requiring additional information have been directed to contact the festival's designated data protection officer at privacy@labiennale.org for support and updates regarding the incident.
