Veolia North America, a division of the global Veolia group specializing in water, waste, and energy management systems, reports a ransomware attack that disrupted its Municipal Water division's operations in North America.

The attack impacted software applications and systems, leading to interruptions in online bill payment services for customers, but did not affect water or wastewater treatment operations. Customers will not be penalized for late payments as a result of the service interruption.

Veolia took the targeted systems offline and is working with law enforcement and third-party experts to manage the incident. It resulted in the theft of personal information of several individuals, but no details are disclosed about the nature of the breached data or number of affectted individuals.

Update - On February 9, 2024, Veolia North America reported that the ransomware attack has compromised sensitive customer information, including:

  • names,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • financial details,
  • dates of birth,
  • government IDs,
  • driver’s license numbers
