Personal data of both current and former students, as well as employees, at Virginia Tech has been exposed in a recent cybersecurity breach disclosed by the university. The compromised files encompassed essential demographic information pertaining to the students and dining service staff associated with the institution. These files were being stored on a computer workstation located within the student affairs division. This specific workstation has since been taken offline.
The university was made aware of this security incident when an unauthorized party accessed the information on 5th of September 2023. Presently, Virginia Tech’s Information Technology Security Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. Per the university’s statement, there is no indication that any other workstations or data have been impacted by this breach.

The university asserted that they do not reasonably anticipate incidents of identity theft or fraud resulting from this breach.
