The York Region District School Board (YRDSB), the hird-largest school district in Ontario is experiencing a significant cybersecurity incident starting from November 8 that caused a two-day network outage.
The incident is affecting various systems including WiFi, email, phone services, and the board's website. While safe arrival and emergency lines were kept operational, delays in response times are anticipated. YRDSB announced on social media that the electronic delivery of elementary school progress reports would be postponed until network services are restored.
The administration has engaged with legal and technical experts to assess the breach's scope and is collaborating with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation to understand the incident's cause and impact. Given that part of the incident is significant systems shutdown, it's quite possible that the attack is some form of ransomware.
