Water for People attacked by ransomware gang

Learn More

Water for People, a nonprofit dedicated to providing clean water in impoverished areas, was recently targeted by the ransomware-as-a-service group Medusa, who listed the organization on their darknet site and demands a $300,000 ransom. Water for People operates in nine countries and is actively combatting the global water crisis.

The accessed data, which predates 2021, did not affect Water for People's financial systems or operations. The attack comes after the nonprofit received a $15 million grant from MacKenzie Scott, although there's no indication the ransomware attack was related to this donation.

Water for People have engaged top incident response firms and are strengthening their systems to prevent future attacks. No details are disclosed about the impact of the attack, data breached or impacted individuals.

Medusa, known for its opportunistic attacks, has previously targeted other organizations involved in water provision, and ransomware groups in general have attacked the nonprofit sector, including Save the Children International.
